Hailing from the Marwar region in Rajasthan, India; this breed of intelligent and beautiful horses were originally prized as mounts for Rathari rulers due to their great stamina, loyalty, and bravery in battle.

The Marwari breed has a characteristically refined head with wide-spread eyes and a straight profile. However, the most striking feature of the Marwari is their heart-shaped ears, which curl inward and almost appear to meet tip to tip. Other distinguishing features are the well-defined withers, strong yet short back, and high-set tail. Of course, there is also their formidable reputation as a horse with high endurance.

It is that trait, along with their hard hooves and quick speed, that has made the Marwari what it is today. Extremely prized amongst breeders, the Marwari can be found in various shows, sporting events, and as the mounts for police officers and the military. Also, these horses are featured in many Bollywood films due to their beauty, intelligence, and popularity.

Thought to be descended from the “Great Horse” brought to England by William the Conqueror, these horses were prized by peasants who used them in farm work. In Suffolk, the ground is made up of a heavy clay soil, and the Suffolk Punch was perfect for plowing these fields because of their inherent power, stamina, and longevity.

If you ever wonder if the chestnut (chesnut as it would appear on the papers) horse in front of you is a Suffolk Punch, there are a few characteristics which stand out. Suffolk Punches have a powerful arching neck, strong upright shoulders, a short strong back, wide hipbones, and a high tail. The legs will appear short, whih is part of the reason they have so much power as a draft horse.

Special thanks Ev for inquiring about this remarkable breed.
